Outdoor Adventures in Glasgow

Glasgow is known for its urban lifestyle but we still feel close to nature in this amazing city. There are tons of gardens and parks in this city which means you can make the most of a sunny day by planning a little picnic. In addition to this, there are other areas in Glasgow which offer many opportunities for outdoor activities/adventures. These areas include mountains close to the north of Glasgow, Trossachs National Park, Scottish islands like Tiree or Bute, and so many more!

If you are an international student based out of Glasgow then we can assure you that there won’t be any dull moment while exploring this city. So, this weekend, take a break from studies and check out some of the fun-filled outdoor adventures in Glasgow!

1. Hiking at the Kelvin Walkway

The Kelvin Walkway stretches from Patrick to Milngavie and is considered an easy day hike which gets connected with Scotland’s famous long-distance hike. Throughout this passage, you will see some of the famous spots like the Riverside Museum, River Kelvin, Kelvingrove Park, and Glasgow Botanic Garden. The passage is easy to navigate up until the Maryhill Rocks after which it becomes wild and secluded as you continue to move towards Milngavie.

For the ease of visitors, the passage is well-marked and is mostly flat. However, it is generally advisable to save the walk description on your phone as it comes in handy. If you are planning to hike here, you should wear hiking boots or shoes since it can get muddy sometimes.

2. Renting a Nextbike City Bike

To make the most of your time, here in this city, you should sometimes consider renting a bike and experience the beauty of this city on two wheels. It is advisable to cycle along the Clyde to enjoy sightseeing in the West End and the City Centre so that you don’t have to figure out public transportation.

To ensure better accessibility, the Nextbike bike-sharing scheme has many stations all around the city. It is also super easy to sign up for this scheme. All you have to do is download the app, sign up for it, and choose a bike to rent out. You can make a payment through a card and the charges are affordable as it costs GBP 1 for 30 mins and the maximum limit per day is set to GBP 10.

3. Wakeboarding at Glasgow Wake Park

This is one of the most exciting outdoor adventures in Glasgow that you can try. Located in the north of Glasgow, the Glasgow Wake Park entails a system 2.0 wake park. A system 2.0 means that a cable bridges two large poles so that one gets a continuous loop experience on the board. Once you get the hang of the corners, you will be able to wakeboard back and forth the cable endlessly and easily. Although it can appear to be hard, System 2.0 is the easiest way to learn wakeboarding.

A one-on-one wakeboarding session at the wakeboarding park involves a training session on the land where the professional trainer will teach you how to move your body on the board and in the water. After this, for 15 minutes, you will be in water where you will learn how to stand up on the board and how you can make round corners by avoiding getting dunked.

4. Climbing at The Climbing Academy

The Climbing Academy has 2 centres in Glasgow – the Prop store in Maryhill and the Newsroom in the Southside. Both of these stores focus on providing amazing bouldering experiences. Although the Pop Store also offers sections of auto-belay routes and top rope.

If you are a beginner in climbing then the good news is that this sport is quite easy to begin with. Anyone interested can sign up as a new member at The Climbing Academy and can start their climbing journey after watching safety instructions videos. The Climbing Academy has a colour-coded routes system where purple is the easiest and to reach the highest level you have to work your way through the various colours of the rainbow.

5. Walking in a Country Park

Glasgow is well-known for having many green spaces which include many parks and gardens. Many parks are small which means that within an hour or two you can easily explore them while walking and can even enjoy a little picnic by bringing your mats and basket.

There are some expansive wilder parks, where you can go to be away for a while from the hustle and bustle of the city. Located in the Southside, Pollok Park is the only country park which is situated within the city limits. The other country parks in Glasgow include Cathkin Brae Country Park, Mugdock Country Park, Drumpellier Country Park, and Seven Lochs Wetland Park.
