Places to Visit in Bath

Did you know that during the Roman rule in Britain, Bath was regarded as an elegant city for relaxation and pleasure? This beautiful city has now been given the status of the World Heritage Site. In addition to its rich history, Bath also takes pride in its traditional heritage, and modern architectural and cultural significance. Coming to its architecture, Bath has many amazing places to visit such as alluring parks, art galleries, museums, historical thermal spring baths and some of the finest restaurants.

Are you an international student based out of Bath and wondering about exploring this beautiful city? If the answer is yes, then this blog will help you greatly as here we have covered some of the amazing places to visit in Bath!

1. The Jane Austen Centre

The Jane Austen Centre is a historical museum and as the name suggests is based on the famous writer – Jane Austen and her life in Bath. Elements like artefacts, exhibits and models are displayed here, portraying how the city of Bath affected the life and writing of Jane Austen. Here you will also see a wax statue of Jane Austen alongside a small watercolour painting of her. To offer an immersive experience to the visitors, the ambience of the museum is made quite interactive.

You can explore this centre with the help of experienced guides who are surprisingly dressed in Regency costumes, taste delectable cuisines at the Regency Tea Room, buy souvenirs at the gift shop and write with quills and ink. There is even a Jane Austen Festival organised by this museum which is held in September and is held for 10 days to honour the life of Jane Austen.

2. Mary Shelly’s House of Frankenstein

Mary Shelly’s House of Frankenstein is one of the quirkiest places to visit in Bath and is a historical house showcasing the life of the author and her world-famous novel. The reason this museum is regarded as innovative is the fact that it offers an interactive multi-sensory ambience to visitors, with the help of the objects that are mentioned in the novel. This place has four floors which entails a dank basement and a scary attic where you will come across assorted body parts in cellars, dark niches and vaults.

A separate floor is dedicated to the outstanding talent and unusual interests of the author. The main highlight of this place is the life-size model of the monster which was the brainchild of Dr. Frankenstein. To add the elements of fun and thrill for the visitors, there is a game called Victor Lair’s Escape Room conducted in which the visitors have to solve the ramblings of the mad scientist and find a way to get out of the room.

Victoria Art Gallery is a public art museum which is considered heaven for art lovers. Their collection includes decorative arts, paintings and sculptures made by artists like Walter Sickert and Thomas Gainsborough, both of whom have resided and worked in Bath. Designed in 1897 by John Mckean Brydon and inaugurated in 1900, this museum is a tribute to Queen Victoria’s sixty years on the throne.

The exterior architecture of the building is adorned with the statue of the queen and friezes of classical figures. It was initially popular for 18th-century portrait painting but later became famous for the amazing work done by the Bath Academy of Art’s artists. To dive deep into the beauty of art, you can attend various exhibitions organised at this museum.
